What Sump Pumps Do

A sump pump – as implied by its name – is a mechanical pump mechanism installed in a building’s basement that pumps water away from the home to prevent or mitigate water damage. The pumped out water is usually directed into a dry well, the city’s storm drains, or another safe location. Some older homes may have their sump pumps directed into the sanitary sewer, but due to potentially overburdening water sanitation systems, this is no longer considered best practice, and may even be against the law depending on your municipality. It is important to be aware of the configuration of your sump pump and all applicable bylaws.

If you are wondering if you need a sump pump, the first thing to check is your municipality’s code. Some towns or cities may actually require a sump pump installed in all homes, while others may require it depending on the location of your home. In some areas there may be tax incentives to assist you in obtaining one.

If a sump pump is not required where you live, but you suspect you may need one, it is best to consult with a professional who can tell you about the water table level at your property and what the best practices are for your area.

Some signs that may indicate you need a sump pump include visible cracking in your home’s foundation, dampness or a musty odour coming from your basement, or mould growth.

If you decide to get a sump pump installed, or are considering getting your current pump replaced or upgraded, it is wise to ensure it has been installed with some form of backup in the even of a power outage during a disaster. We at Action Auger are sump pump experts. One of our technicians would be happy to help you install, repair, or replace your home’s sump pump.
